From its small workshop in Via Maria Vittoria in the heart of Turin, the Calcagno brand has promoted the “chocolate as it used to be” tradition since the end of the war. Today the business is run by a group of prevalently female partners among whom Alessandra Castelletto and Erica Galardo are key figures. Their aim is to continue to produce chocolate according to tradition with period machinery from the original workshop, which they have restored and which is now as good as new. Standout specialities include gianduiotti – classic, plain and bitter almond – and spreads made with PGI Piedmontese hazelnuts – such as Nocciola Insolita, Piemonte, Pistacchio e Cacao – as well as chocolate and hazelnut chocolates and various types of chocolate bar, plus seasonal products such as Christmas confectionery and Easter eggs. Also very popular are the company’s innovative take on cremini, mini chocolate sandwiches with a layer of plain or milk chocolate on the outside in lieu of gianduja paste and a thicker, more generous filling of hazelnut paste to create a pleasant contrast between crunchiness and softness
