This exemplary dairy farm, which breeds cattle but also hens, is situated in the countryside around Villastellone, just a few kilometres from Turin. After converting the farm to a more extensive production model, the Masera family now produce prime-quality ‘noble’ milk from 27 Friesian cattle, which graze on 24 hectares of land on a variety of forage grasses and herbs and the eggs of the 50 free-range hens. Milk and eggs provide the main ingredients for the farm’s fabulous ice creams (the fiordilatte, yoghurt, custard and Langarola – vanilla dotted with sponge cake – flavours deserve special mention), which it sells in its two ice cream parlours, respectively in Villastellone and Turin. The milk, Lait Real, produced in smaller quantities (15-18 litres a day per cow) compared to industrial dairy farms, has a more intense flavour, is yellower in colour, and is very wholesome indeed drunk on its own. The shop in Villastellone is open every day from 9.30am, the one in Turin from 3pm to 9.30pm (even later in summer).
