For the people of Chieri, Buttiglieri is a shop they can rely on, a place where they love to meet to enjoy high-quality cakes and confectionery. The patisserie is situated very close to the Duomo and has been run since 1967 by Pino and his wife Lisetta. At breakfast time the shop is packed with punters savoring delicate apple puff pastries, croissants, and classic and with cereals, whose common denominator is their digestibility. Typical Piedmontese fresh and dry pastries feature at the counter: hence chantilly (tiny buns filled with Chantilly cream), bignole (small cream-filled choux pastry buns), paste di meliga (cornmeal biscuits), brutti e buoni (“ugly but good”, irregularly shaped cookies) and baci di dama (“lady’s kisses”, semi-spherical chocolate-coated shortcrust pastry cookies with chopped almonds or hazelnuts). Not to be missed us the typical sweet focaccia chierese, which they now make in an autumn version, with chestnuts and dried fruit. Other specialties of the house are chocolates such as baci chieresi, Umbertino (a soft amaretto cookie), Don Bosco, white chocolate and absinthe-flavoured coated with plain chocolate, and Perché, hazelnut cream and wafer coated with plain chocolate. Then there’s Umbertino, a soft amaretto cookie, Genzianella, a wafer with gentian violet cream coated with plain chocolate, and classic savoiardi, sponge fingers, classic or made with rice flour. One of the most popular cakes is hazelnut tart. The savory pastries are fragrant and light.
