The Giovanetto farm came into being in the early years of this century with the cultivation of olive trees on small plots of land in the hills round Settimo Vittone. The trees are planted at different altitudes with the purpose of preserving the terraced land, only parts of which can be given over to vine growing. Given the difficulties involved in reaching the small isolated plots, in this area, as in that of Carema, both olive growing and vine growing may be defined as “heroic”. In fact, the harvested olives – Tuscan cultivars such as leccino, moraiolo, and don Carlo – have to be delivered to the valley on a small cableway. The impressive municipal oil press which Giovanetto had installed in Settimo Vittone is now used by a number of oil producers, some from as far away as the province of Asti. A fascinating product is the oil aromatized with lemons from Sicily, while, on the wine front, the Canavese Nebbiolo aged in wood for 12 to 15 months and the Canavese Rosso, produced with a blend of native grapes, are excellent too.
