GallinaThis fishmonger by the Porta Palazzo market is one of the city spots loved by both locals and tourists, all drawn in by its iconic aura. The architect of this magic (the term is not accidental, given that the owner is also a magician) is Beppe Gallina, known for his ever-ready wit, contagious laugh and unwavering care for his craft and his customers.
The entrance leads straight into the shop, where a large counter showcases the best that Italian waters (particularly the Ligurian Sea) have to offer. The fish here is always very fresh, with both variety and quality kept high thanks to Beppe’s uncompromising attention. Octopus, sole, sea bass, red mullet, crustaceans – there is no shortage of choice, although the real gem is the small adjoining restaurant where every day you can eat the best of the catch at honest prices. There are no reservations, but it’s worth joining the queue, whether for lunch and dinner. The unmissable specialty, also found at the second location in San Salvario, is the fried fish, crisp, flavourful, cooked to perfection and always prepared in small batches.
