Piero – Gelateria Artigianale

Piercarlo Cotterchio, a native of the Val di Susa, used to work in his family’s bar and trattoria. Then, in 2008, he decided to devote himself exclusively to making wholesome, sustainable ice cream. In the same year he opened a gelateria using only the produce of small virtuous firms and farms (Mondovì cornmeal bicuits, Pancalieri mint, PGI Piedmontese hazelnuts, Bronte pistachios, Avola almonds and solely seasonal fruit). Along the way he has also totally eliminated water waste. Standing out among the many vegan flavors, made with OGM-free soya, is SuperPippo peanut (Pippo is the Italian name for Goofy, the Disney cartoon character who loves the nuts). Some creations are influenced by Piercarlo’s passion for traditional patisserie: favorites with customers are Sacher (a homage to the superb Viennese torte), torta di Piero (cornmeal, stracciatella and black cherry), and Nuvola, inspired by a famous coconut-flavored chocolate from Alba. All these flavors are produced as ice creams, as iced cakes and as semifreddi. In autumn the gelateria also produces persimmon and chestnut flavors, plus red celery, the pride and joy of Orbassano, promoted by a Slow Food Presidium.
